Matilde di Canossa
The most important female figure of the Middle Ages, who lived here and who was the protagonist of one of the most famous historical episodes in the history of Europe.
This episode has historical significance worldwide as the investiture struggle between church and empire culminated with the humiliation and submission of Emperor HenryIV in front of Pope Gregory VII in 1077 at the Castle of Canossa, from which the said “go to Canossa”.
This event is very well known abroad (in Germany conferences are held annually on the subject) due to the importance of such agreements still valid today.
